How to Fish beginner guide: escape the first island
How to Fish is less interested in a calm afternoon on the lake than it first appears. You and up to three friends have crashed on a small island; getting home means learning the fishing loop, following the local leads, and treating strange catches like they might matter.
Controls and the real game loop
Fishing is the delivery mechanism, not the whole game. Your loop is catch → kill → raise value → sell → upgrade → complete quests → reach the next island. Use E to interact, talk and buy; Q to throw held items into NPC turn-ins; F to inspect an item and check whether it is valuable or quest-related; and Tab to open the collection book.
With the rod equipped, right-click to cast, left-click to reel after a bite, then right-click to drop the catch on land. Press X to put the rod away before using fists or a weapon.
New-player rule
If an item looks like a quest reward, a trophy, or something unusually specific, inspect and keep it. Progression often depends on the turn-in.
Make your first money and upgrades
Pick up the free clams near the crash. Eat one if needed and sell the rest for your first dollars. Buy the crab rod and catch brown crabs, shrimp and lobster around the starter rock. Hot dogs work as bait for better catches.
- Brass knuckles: a dependable first damage upgrade with no ammo cost.
- Knife: slower, heavier damage; sharpen it at the nearby upgrade station.
- Inventory slots: useful earlier than they look because dropped items can be lost to terrain, water or seagulls.
Follow the lighthouse keeper’s beer quest
The keeper is missing beer because a long-legged Spider Crab keeps stealing it. Buy a beer and give it to him; after he empties it, use the empty can as the boss bait. Prepare your melee upgrade and healing before triggering the catch.
- Talk before leaving: check the keeper after every important find.
- Use the clue: the beer theft is the first progression quest, not background flavor.
- Keep the body: return the defeated Spider Crab instead of selling or eating it.
Fight the Spider Crab without getting one-shot
Circle around the rocks and dock, then wait for the crab to charge. When stars appear over its head, it is stunned for roughly three seconds. Stay close enough to reach that opening, land one or two knife hits, and retreat before the next attack. Eat perimeter clams when your health drops.
After the kill, hand the body to the lighthouse keeper for the boat keys. In co-op, name one person to carry it and announce the hand-in before anyone boards.
Use the radar to move on
Get the inexpensive radar beside the lighthouse once the quest advances. Equip it on the boat and follow the new signal toward the Forest island. Later boat upgrades can make the radar permanent, but the basic version is enough to leave the tutorial route.
Before crossing, confirm that the hand-in completed, the quest carrier has no unique item left, and somebody knows who is steering.
A clean co-op start
- Choose one player to steer and one to watch the current objective.
- Keep important drops with the objective player until they are turned in.
- Make the radar check part of the departure routine.
- Call out discoveries and avoid leaving an island while someone is still exploring.
- Use the first island to agree on your crew's inventory and communication habits.
